Shopping Local in West End
Creative, eclectic and always unique…West End is the charismatic urban playground of inner-city Brisbane. It’s a soul-filled neighbourhood that celebrates diversity, street art, vintage finds, craft beer and delicious food from around the world. Here’s just a taste of the independent stores the locals love to visit, all are within walking distance of Bankside West End.
Mappin's Nursery & Aquarium
Mappin’s converted warehouse on Montague Rd is filled with a fascinating selection of lush plants and fruit trees for your balcony, courtyard and home. The friendly owners are more than happy to give you helpful green thumb advice. Keep an eye out for their workshops where you can learn about terrariums, Japanese miniature gardens, botanical sculpture and more.
SWOP West End
The concept behind Swop is that you can sell and buy your vintage clothes. Every Friday the store opens its exchange booth where you can either get instore credit or a percentage of the sale in cash. There are men’s and women’s clothes, along with a great range of shoes. You won’t find fast fashion here…it’s all about pre-loved, sustainably sourced vintage and designer threads. It’s a great place to fossick for something unique and it’s been so popular that they have launched outposts in Sydney and Melbourne.
Avid Reader
Avid Reader is more than a book shop, it’s sort of like a community hub. The team behind the counter are all authors, artists, musicians and creatives. They host a range of book clubs, workshops, and events you can get involved in. Warning: it’s VERY easy to lose a few hours perusing the isles and getting into a discussion over a certain author or genre.
Euphora Boutique
Need something to wear out to drinks on Fish Lane? Euphora Boutique will have the ladies sorted. They stock a great range of women’s fashion with accessories to match. There’s always something new to fall in love with, with new stock arriving all the time.
West End Markets
The legendary West End Markets are held every Saturday from 6am to 2pm in Davies Park. This vibrant community market hosts more than 150 unique vendors and celebrates cultural diversity, independence and local makers. Soak up the cruisey atmosphere while you shop for fresh produce, flowers, hand crafted gifts, fashion and taste some of the delicious food. There’s always live music playing which you can enjoy under the shade of the giant old Moreton Bay fig trees.
